Zinc toxicity or copper deficiency leads to neuropathies as a result of damage to the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath helps to protect nerve cells, and damage to the myelin can result in a number of neurological symptoms. Zinc toxicity and copper deficiency is often misdiagnosed by physicians because the signs and symptoms (muscle weakness, seemingly unexplained tingling, epidermal hypersensitivity, impaired balance, etc.) so closely resemble other diseases and because the diagnosis has only been recently understood.

Patients suffering from Denture Cream Neuropathy (DCN) are often mistakenly diagnosed with more common diseases with similar symptoms, including:

Multiple Sclerosis
This disease is commonly known as MS and is a disseminating disease in which the myelin sheaths in the brain and the spinal cord are damaged. This nerve damage impairs the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate. The patient's own immune system then begins to attack the myelin and results in the demyelination of the nerve. Multiple sclerosis often affects younger patients and the symptoms can wax and wane for years before being properly diagnosed.

Idiopathic Inflammatory Demyelinating Disease
This class of demyelinating disease includes the unexplained or difficult to explain cases in which myelin damage is substantiated through symptomology or diagnostic testing, but does not fall clearly into the diagnostic criteria for one of the other demyelinating diseases.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis
This is an immune-mediated disease; which is most often the result of a viral infection.  However, the disease, can also be secondary to bacterial or parasitic infection. It is also thought that the disease can develop as a reaction to a vaccine.

Transverse Myelitis
This neurological disease is associated with viral, bacterial or parasitic infections.  It can also be secondary to multiple sclerosis and trauma.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome
This is a disease of the peripheral nervous system, and is usually the result of an acute infectious process.

These and other diseases of the myelin can often present with symptoms very similar to the recently defined disease of denture cream neuropathy. If you experience symptoms consistent with a neurological condition you should immediately consult your physician.
